Review of Take the Money and Run (1969) by Steve W — 14 Mar 2013
Woody Allen's debut is a treat. Its a zany and hilarious send-off of heist and crime character documentaries, done in glorious detail with footage of people who were connected with the notorious criminal Virgil Starkwell.
He's a bumbling young man with no direction, so he turns to crime and falls in love. The movie does have some gags that simply don't work, but there are lots of side giggling set pieces. My favourite has to be when Virgil robs a bank for the first time.
It had me in stitches. Very silly and very well made, Take the Money and Run is one of the better debuts from filmmakers.
