Review of Take Shelter (2011) by Charles R — 17 Nov 2013
No matter how much soul-wrenching drama Shannon, Chastain, and director Nichols commit to in this 'impending eco-doom' modern parable, there's really no pay-off to what is mostly a tense and well-crafted Hitchcock-esque thriller.
Also, nothing in the synopsis mentions how glacially slow this story unwinds - after the first 39 min I felt like I was about shake my screen and scream at the storm to HURRY IT UP. In so many words, NOTHING HAPPENS IN THIS MOVIE.
Sorry to spoil it for all of you, but I just needed to get that out. All the players and the crew involved seem to be delivering the 'powerhouse' performance of their lives, but in essence, there should have been at least ONE pulse-pounding scene to deliver the audience from the film's overall interminable coma-inducing wait.
.. 2/5 if only because Shannon and Chastain really do give amazing preformanc-- ah what the hell it's cause Shannon flips a table, and he nails it. That's pretty much it.
