Review of Take Shelter (2011) by Alex G — 25 May 2012
The star is there only because Flixster requires you to enter something in order to review a movie. I can't tell you how many stars this movie rates because 20 minutes in I decided I couldnâ(TM)t finish watching it.
What I saw was of good quality, and I note that other viewer reviews are almost uniformly high, but I couldn't bear the intensity of Curtis' short bouts of insanity -- the almost pornographic violence of his apocalyptic visions just a few scenes into the movie, knowing that worse was yet to come -- I guess I don't deal well with mental illness, because I couldn't go on.
I've had similar reactions to movies about down-and-out drunks. I hope it had an uplifting ending.
