Great acting cannot save this "is he or isn't he" plot from having no pay off no matter which direction it chooses to go. By the finish, it didn't matter how it ends, just as long as it does.

Drawn out back and forth script focuses all its time on having the audience guess the ending, but is not able to keep us interested enough to continue guessing. There is nothing wrong with being subtle, but it does not excuse it from being so unsatisfying and ineffective.
