Review of Take Shelter (2011) by Derek D — 07 Feb 2013
So the way I've been handling writing these reviews is more from my gut, rather than from any sort of film analysis knowledge. And that's what gives me little to say about Take Shelter. From a a truly critical level this film does everything right. The script is well written, the acting is fantastic, the direction is tight and keeps a steady tone throughout. But as the credits rolled I only had one thought going through my head:
Blah.
This film just didn't hit me on any level. I got what it was trying to do - and do well. But maybe the subject matter just isn't my cup of tea. I know that makes a terrible review. So sue me.
So, if you like movies about exploring the depths of paranoid schizophrenia and the blurry wall between reality and fiction. Try it out. The movie really seems to capture the essence of what that feels like - or so I imagine. I'll probably never see it again though. And will most likely forget about it's existence after a year.
