This was actually pretty good. There's really no 80's pop culture humor, the fact that it takes place in the 80's is almost incidental. It's trying more to be a coming-of-age John Hughes movie, hence the fact that it takes place in "Shermer".
It's not the funniest movie, but it has its moments and comes off as pretty genuine.
