Review of Take Me Home Tonight (2011) by Andrew V — 15 Mar 2012
80s nostalgia has recently been done with Adventureland and reaped the benefits because it used that era as a backdrop to display a story anyone can relate to. It focused on a young man who recently finished college and is at a crossroads in his life.
Take Me Home Tonight is about a young man who recently finished college and is at a crossroads in life... set in the 80s! There are obvious similarities to both films, but Take Me Home Tonight glorifies the 80s too much and caricatures the decade (similar to Hot Tub Time Machine).
I am kind of a sucker for these kind of movies though, and it is fun to see the ridiculousness of the Reagan Era brought to screen (wouldn't be the 80s without cocaine). In the end though, Take Me Home Tonight is kind of like the younger, more energetic (but less intelligent) brother of the more thoughtful Adventureland, where excess is the name of the game (kind of like the 80s).
