Review of Take Me Home Tonight (2011) by Michael V — 08 Nov 2011
This is not a parody of the 80's comedy. The story just happens to take place then. It looks like a movie that was made in the 80's rather then a movie making fun of the lingo, hair and crazy clothes and ton of coke usage.
It is a period piece. This comes off as an 80's version of American Graffiti or Dazed and Confused with a twist of Superbad. Just not as much as a cult classic feel. The film has a great, tight script that stays focused throughout.
This also has a good amount of heart, especially right when it is needed. The ending has a very nice John Hughes feel to it while never dragging mud over his style. Topher Grace gives an awesome performance, I really enjoy him as an actor and think he's kind of overlooked.
Dan Fogler also gives an awesome performance as the crazy friend. Anna Faris mixes amazingly well as Topher Grace's twins sister. I'd really love to see them work together again. Teresa Palmer, as hot as she is and I canâ(TM)t say anything bad about her acting.
Her part just never seemed to fit for the time period. Plus seeing Michael Biehn again is wonderful since he was the sensitive badass action star of that time. Michelle Trachtenberg is hot as hell all gothed up.
And Demetri Martin steals both scenes he is in. And the soundtrack is amazing. It never feels like they just went digging through a pile greatest hits collection CD's. It feels like they hand picked each song for the moment.
And somehow managed to stay away from all the horrible shit songs from that era. Highly enjoyed this.
