Review of Tag (2018) by Wayne K — 07 Sep 2018
A fast-paced, frequently touching story of a group of friends determined to hold onto one single shred of their childhoods by playing their favourite school game every year, Tag is the kind of film I would admittedly shrug off as nothing more than infantile, frat boy hijinks filled with lowbrow humour and gaping mouth reactions to dudes getting hit in the crotch.
But it completely won me over, charming me with it's quirky characters and keeping me entertained with its madcap antics. The film takes several unnecessarily dark turns in the 3rd act, with genuinely uncomfortable issues being portrayed in a flippantly comical light.
But I was never put off by anything that was happening, and the central theme of the film, lasting friendships, is very well handled. I always believed that the leads were the best of friends, and the bantering and occasional bickering always fell within the realms of a 30-year kinship.
It's an easy film to watch, for the most part, and contains a number of jokes that will have you laughing out loud, no matter how many times you hear them.
