Review of Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War (2004) by Rich A — 01 Oct 2007
This war movie reminds me why even as a then-angst-driven, young adult/collegian, I still find the time for sentimental weepies--juxtaposed with the gruesome realities of war. I guess this Korean epic is just one of many Korean blockbusters/New Wave films that will constantly taunt the long-repressed soft side that I so successfully(?) touch the human cord in me! Though word of warning: in order to tap into that tear-jerking humanity, one must stomach the worst of the worst in war movie history, such as the hospital scenes, brutal close-quarters combat fighting (there was a scene where a dead combatant is hauled away in a stretcher--minus a lower jaw!).
So yeah; it's an accurate comparison to call Tae Guk Gi as the Korean answer to Saving Private Ryan, and Band of Brothers!
*just don't expect any wasted talent utilized by some questionable cult financiers, a la Inchon! :-P.
