Review of Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War (2004) by Jesse O — 09 May 2008
The first 30 minutes or so were incredibly corny to be honest but I guess it served a purpose to establish how close the brothers were and it helps to remind you how much Jin Tae had changed as he gained higher status as a soldier.
I really liked the war scenes, it was kept realistic and gritty while the cinematography was still top-notch (hell it looked better than some hollywood movies). The acting was decent at best it really wasn't anything to write home about, though I'm going to complain here because Min Sik Choi (Oh Dae Su in Oldboy) had a REALLY small part and that's just not something you do with an amazing actor like him.
It's just a minor complaint as I realize the focus of the film wasn't Min Sik Choi's character. Overall a really good film, it's not one of the greatest war movies of all time but it's still a very very good film.
