Review of Tabu (2012) by Nina L — 30 Dec 2012
Such an odd movie but so excellent! You're not used to the beginning: it takes place in Lisbon with an old lady, her African maid and her neighbor and it goes so...slow. Probably too slow. Any scene takes 5 minutes and I enjoyed listening to the way the characters chew their food.
The film director should have rescued us from this lovely sound. Obviously, the maid loved shrimps. However, the second part of the movie which is actually the first part (just like in Star Wars...) is brilliant.
It's film shot just like a 60's movie with a Super 8 camera. In a beautiful black & white the taler explains the drama this old lady, Aurora, experienced. The young and beautiful woman who was know for being cold and vain, raised in a former Portuguese colony in Africa nearby the mount Tabu, did.
..awful things...This movie is a must-see for the photography, this very unique idea of a movie in two parts (present and past, old and young, silent) on a great soundtrack.
