Review of Tabloid (2011) by Shahriar M — 29 Jun 2011
Wow. If there was ever a character born to star in an Errol Morris film, Joyce McKinney is that character! This is a funny, terrifically entertaining biodoc, with a larger than life girl at its center.
McKinney became tabloid fodder in the 70s when she supposedly (not according to her) kidnapped a mormon missionary and had her way with him for a few days, at which point, he shook his head out of the fog and stumbled back to church.
In some ways this film is reminiscent of The Eyes of Tammy Faye, in that an almost cartoon character becomes humanized over the course of the film. The laughs are big at first, and become more informed over the course of the film.
