Review of Table 19 (2017) by Rachel W — 18 Jun 2017
I liked this film, and I'm glad I got to watch it on a flight, without the ability to search other reviews before I watched. This is a charming, inoffensive film. It isn't deep, but it does some soul searching.
Everyone at the table is a misfit, and they don't like each other very much at first, especially when Anna Kendrick's unhappy character clues them in on why they are all at table 19. She isn't very likable in that moment, which makes it better when you get into the plot further and see why.
Even the "villains" in the piece are somewhat understandable. Of course we're routing for Anna Kendrick, but it's easy to see the point of view of the ex-boyfriend, the new maid of honor, and the guy at the table who is kind of a jerk, but also pretty cool for standing up for the girl who is being hit on (by one of our table 19 guests) who has said no, and he keeps trying.
The cast sort of starts out pathetic, but in their joining together at a crucial reveal, they end up becoming a ragtag team, ready to try to give each person at the table a little bit of a happy ending.
I'm glad I watched it, and I think the reviews are wrong. Sometimes, a nice, happy little film is all that is needed - and when done with warmth and grounded by a cast of really great actors, Table 19 becomes something more.
