Review of T2 Trainspotting (2017) by Philip L — 06 Feb 2017
20 years later T2 is a largely entertaining romp into the world of what happens next. The wit is still there especially in the working man's club scene. The plot is however rather too convenient and there is an over reliance on flashback - possibly for those not familiar with the original.
There is some retconning too, with the title now explained. Of the cast Robert Carlisle seems to have aged the most possibly as the actor has disappeared for the last 10 years. In one scene he almost acts like a certain other T2 in a scene that could come straight out of a Terminator movie.
Perhaps the most distracting thing is Ewan McGregor who you just think of as Ewan McGregor rather than the character Renton - he looks too good for a character who spent most of his younger life off his face.
What is pleasant change is the extensive use of Edinburgh for location filming - only the pretitle sequence of the original featured the city - maybe the setting was irrelevant in the drug fueled haze of T1 - which has now cleared somewhat.
