Review of Syriana (2005) by Paul N — 11 Jan 2009
Engrossing, often baffling and, ultimately, thoroughly depressing film giving the TRAFFIC treatment to the machinations of the Oil industry (the films share the same screenwriter, Stephen Gaghan, who also directs here) and its impact upon the global economy.
While that sounds about as fascinating as the study of insect droppings, it's actually directed with some verve, giving it the feel of an HBO drama. Excellent performances all round, and the film makes some pertinent points that'll make you despair at the state of things, wondering, "How has it all come to this?" (Yeah, it's not your date movie.
).
