Review of Syriana (2005) by Fraser M — 19 Mar 2009
A 2005 film that was my favorite of that year. It came and went so fast that I knew no one who saw it in the theatre. I watched it three times and have passed the DVD on to everyone I know, but most don't give a shit about watching it because it has Matt Damon and George Clooney in it (I'm friends with some real film snobs).
This film is written and directed by Stephen Gaghan (writer of Traffic) with a very assured touch, especially since his previous work was the terrible film Abandon (2002). It's a multi-character film that follow oil, money and politics around the world and show just how corrupt, convoluted and greedy people are at every step of the way.
The film is not neatly wrapped up or even fully understandable from a plot point of view. There are parts that go nowhere and parts that do overlap. It's just as confusing and chaotic and poetic as real life.
Amazing soundtrack too!
