Review of Syriana (2005) by Luke H — 12 Sep 2009
This is some very good stuff; very powerful, very political. Movies may come and go, but their message will remain, especially when it's political, like JFK (1992). Stephen Gaghan has done a very good job; definitely Oscar material.
Top of the order cast- my thought was that George Clooney should have been given more screen time, but in the end realized that if done so, the presenting of the story wouldn't be as powerful. Music was great too- very much in the background, without interrupting the development of the story.
You've got to keep your head in the movie right throughout the 130 mn time period since this is, what I think, totally dialogue-driven. Though the story is a little bit confusing at the beginning - the viewer is taken through a number of characters/lives who are involved in the story, no matter how insignificant (esp.
Bryan's wife and their elder son) - they all add up perfectly and vigorously. This is not a "feel good" movie, neither this is about lot of action, car chases, explosions & sex scenes.
This is entirely about observing, listening and understanding a major aspect of today's economy; a genius piece of work that is not to be missed. I'm gonna watch it again.
