Review of Syriana (2005) by Dave A — 10 Jul 2011
An okay movie but I'm not going out of my way to say it's one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life. This Traffic-style film tells three stories against the world of U.S.-Middle Eastern relations and our constant dependency on oil.
The stories consist of a ordeal-surviving CIA agent (George Clooney) who gets screwed over by cowardly superiors and put out to pasture; an oil analyst (Matt Damon) who undergoes a devastating personal tragedy and inadvertently finds opportunity and an attorney (Jeffrey Wright) who gets real familiar, real quick with his client when he finds out about their business practices.
The film is okay and the political commentary is in droves. But it's nothing you're missing. I liked Traffic much more. But props to Clooney, who got fat for the part and won an Oscar in the process and debilitating spinal pain to boot.
