Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Jesse B — 04 Mar 2010

I'm giving this 5 stars just because it's so thought-provoking...I don't know if it really deserves it though, haha.

What to say about this movie...I think it's got so much going on that I'd need to watch it a few times before I'd really understand all of it. I have my interpretation of what I think it happening in the movie, but that's kinda like a spoiler.

Let me just say that some of the things in this movie are straight brilliant...mostly it's just really confusing.

But someone made me aware of a possibility which kind of blew my mind...maybe I'm just dumb, but what if the movie isn't supposed to make sense? What if it's just a collection of imagery to express an overall idea? A deeper meaning...not unlike painting an abstract picture. It doesn't make sense...necessarily, but it means something...to someone, and it expresses something. Even if the movie itself is completely non-sensical.

Definitely not for someone who is strictly looking for entertainment...this has way too much going on to sit down and watch it casually...
