Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Justin B — 08 Mar 2010
I really like Philip Seymour Hoffman, but he wasn't enough to save this film. As his character grows old, the play he has been working on for several years slowly starts to fuse into reality. The distinction between the two becomes blurry, as does the distinction between this film and drinking sour milk.
IMO, this film is nothing more that self-indulging rubbish. Kaufman cared more about his idea than whether or not his audience would actually enjoy what they were watching. One word to sum up the entire film: frustrating.
One more: bad.
