Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Bill M — 11 Jun 2010
I?ve always enjoyed Charlie Kaufman?s work but I would never consider myself a huge fan. My favourite film of his was his least, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. But after Ebert gave Synecdoche his number one film of the decade I figured it was about time I finally saw this.
My wife and I intended to see this in the theater when it was around but for some reason or another we couldn?t make it, and after seeing it I deeply regret it. Synecdoche is a wonderful film about the misery of life.
Though it is quite an original work it reminded me of some of my favourite films about loss and regret; Schizopolis (doppelgangers, self loathing), My Winnipeg and Afterlife (recreating your past and either trying to improve it or understand it).
If you haven?t see this yet, and are a fan of surreal films, see it as soon as you can. Also, it?s become one of my wife?s favourite films of all time, and that?s a very select list.
