Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Alison O — 09 Jul 2010
It's too easy to use the metaphor of the Russian nesting doll in regards to this film's content, but I will anyway. Just as the warehouses in this film seem to go on forever, so does this film.
It feels longer and more exhausting than any other 2 hour film I have ever seen. All in all, Kaufman tried to make too much film with far too much material and he pays for it. That being said, there is something really quite magical going on here, compelling, saddening and absolutely mind-blowing.
Hoffman is becoming the stuff of legend. It's hard to believe the spaced-out character from "Twister" has risen to the level of such men as De Niro and Brando, while somehow remaining one of the most unique performers in history.
