Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Dan K — 22 Jul 2011
There are very few films that I say to myself during the film that this is a masterpiece. This so happens to be one of them. When I say that this film is beautiful, I mean that it was so beautiful I started laughing and saying "Oh my God, this is beautiful" right out loud. Complex is an adjective that wouldn't do this film justice; it's like Inception, but (dare I say?) better. It's about a man struggling to come to terms with life, and a man running away from death. Most of all, it's about you.
Here's what I don't understand: Why wasn't this film nominated for best picture? Why weren't any of the actors nominated, especially Philip Seymour Hoffman. Better yet, why wasn't this SCRIPT nominated? I can't even imagine how long it took Charlie Kaufman to write this. Chris Nolan, as much as I love you, Synecdoche is the world's best mindfuck since Memento, but that's okay, because you wrote Memento, the best mindfuck of all time.
I want to take a picture of Synecdoche and hang it on my wall. I want to buy a copy of it for all my artistically-inclined friends and tell them: watch this.
I think it's changed my life.
5 Stars and a BEST Picture.
Because not that many movies out there create art forms in themselves.
