Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Mike B — 20 Oct 2013
Synecdoche is weird and wonderful; it is ambiguous in the strangest ways and goes in depth into seemingly every emotion. It has more layers than perhaps any film I've ever seen, like an "Inception" of symbolism and creativity. there are laugh-out-loud moments and moments of deep sadness, and we become absorbed in the story of the dreaming playwright. The film seems to represent everything and nothing, and is both blatantly plain and ridiculously strange. Synecdoche is a masterpiece of intrigue and timeless (partly because it seems to have both no sense of time and a pervasive respect for the passing of it). Synecdoche is open to many interpretations, but mine is that the film intends to delve deep into the feelings of its protagonist, conveying the life of the hopelessly romantic artist as he draws out his vision in a stage we're not sure is real. That doesn't matter, though, because thats not the point.
Synecdoche is hard to follow and not the typical action-packed adventure movie. Still, it's an intriguing journey and a whimsical dark comedy of sorts.
