Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Adam P — 14 Jan 2010
This is the most powerful movie I have ever seen and yet I could not reccommend it. My reaction was personal and provoked an emotive response that clearly isn't replicated in everyone. By saying SNY hit a chord in me but not in others does not mean I am suggesting some extra capacity or emotional intelligence in me than other viewers but rather that it just works for some people and not for others.
I could not reccomend the SNY because some people would hate it and I can see why. It offers little in the way of hope, the plot is intermittent and the unexplained dead ends and quirks could make it seem rather pretencious to some people.
But for me it is the pinacle of film making. After leaving the cinema I felt ill adjusted to reality and as a result never more alive.
