Review of Syndromes and a Century (2006) by Nick A — 01 Jan 2008
At first the film appears to be about the lives of health professionals in Thailand in and out of the workplace. The camera however, manages to shift away from the action frequently and look for something more interesting, which is often blank scenery, the hollow areas of the hospital or of nature.
Iâ??m not sure I got the point of the movie, of if indeed there was a point, but it was certainly a unique look into those charactersâ?? lives and surroundings. (EDIT: I guess it would've helped if I'd read the synopsis before I saw the movie, or wrote)Iâ??m glad that France helped fund the project.
I guess this is a spoiler, so you may want to stop here if you donâ??t want it ruined for you:
Towards the end, any semblance of a plot is abandoned and it turns into an artsy tour of the hospital, and then the park, culminating, oddly enough in a public aerobics class with a catchy indie-rock style tune with a whistled melody playing in the foreground, which came off to me as rather odd. It was like the ole ba-dum-chick drum bit to signal a joke that you might not otherwise get.
