Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Andrew D — 16 May 2008
This amazing revenge tale is tragedy on a Shakespearean level. It's disturbing, brutal, beautiful and sad, with amazing acting. This is a masterpiece and easily one of the best films I've ever seen.
The plot is so intricately detailed and brilliantly constructed. The editing is clever, the cinematography is gorgeous, and the lack of music is haunting. It's ambiguous, subtle, and rich with themes and ironies. Park doesn't insult the audience: he lets you fill in the gaps. Every time I watch it I notice something new, and the ending gives me the chills.
