Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Melanie M — 01 Nov 2008
Chan-Wook Park has a way of bringing out a lot of gut wrenching emotions in all three of his vengeance series movies. Especially from a parents point of view. The way he lets the stories unfold and characters develop you don't even always require dialog or a lot of visuals to feel the impact of emotions the characters are experiencing.
This movie is rather slow paced, but it is almost necessary to the characters development and the overall emotional impact that the movie ultimately will invoke. So I would suggest to be in a patient mood before watching it.
Almost all of the characters in this movie were likable so it was easy to feel sympathy for them. A series of tragic events leaves each one stuck in an emotional hell were there seems to be no real escape. So they turn to vengeance as there only release.
I promise Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance will give you an emotional experience that long after you will find yourself reflecting upon. Now whether that's a good thing or not...well that will be up to you to decide.
