Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Neal R — 07 Jan 2009
I've just recently read an essay by Salman Rushdie about character and destiny, and if character IS Destiny ( In Granta 100 if you are interested ) and it makes me think abou this film. Because here you have two very sympathetic characters who seem locked into a inevitable car crash of a confilict.
I found the characters to all be very arresting, and the irony of " Mr. Vengence " being in fact the less sympathetic character a really interesting aspect of this film. But he is certainly driven just as our protagnaist is dragged to their inevitable walk in the river.
And it is a good metaphor for this movie, the river, because the characters seem to be bobbing along atop of it. Of all the movies in the trilogy, this one is the most human.
