Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Mike B — 01 Aug 2010
The "Vengeance Triolgy" is surely a misnomer in this case, because the film is clearly much more about the lack of sympathy (or more accurately, empathy?) that incubates this cycle of tradgedy and counter-tradgedy.
Very powerful. It thrives on the concept that there are no evil people, just circumstances that coerce them into harmful deeds against others. It demonstrates how the pressures of life in a assymetrical society can turn the best intentions into horrible wrongs.
That being said, it also lays raw the narrow-minded selfishness that provides fertile ground for revenge-driven tradgedy- and idea later echoed in Oldboy ("Laugh, and the whole world laughs with you.
Cry and you'll cry alone"). Perhaps even more impressive is how it articulates one of the most believable characterizations of class divide that I have ever seen.
