Review of Sympathy for Delicious (2010) by Daniel A — 10 Jan 2012
Mark Ruffalo's directorial debut is a fair attempt at a difficult narrative, but at the end of the day he just doesn't pull it off. Sympathy For Delicious follows a paraplegic homeless man who dreams of being a rockstar DJ but unexpectedly receives the power of miraculous healing.
It's an interesting premise and one that is ripe with opportunity to build a great movie around it, but sadly Ruffalo becomes too bogged down in various allegory and morals and messages, leading to confusion over what this movie is actually trying to say. On top of this the performances are inconsistent, from best (Juliette Lewis) to worst (Orlando Bloom) it's a mixed bag.
All in all it's a well-meaning and ambitious attempt, but more than Ruffalo as director can realistically handle.
