Review of Sydney White (2007) by Nathan C — 25 Jul 2011
A good update/reimagining of the "Snow White" tale. The Grimm overtones are absent here, but at least you get some humor and a sweeter aftertaste.
Instead of being "the fairest of them all", Sydney White is headed for college, determined to be a Legacy Kappa sister. Her mum was famous for being a Kappa, we hear. However, the prissy head rejects her, and Sydney allies with the Seven Dorks (not Dwarves) to make things right via the voices of the outcasts.
Amanda Bynes - likeable for the 'good girl' personality she lends to her roles. This one is no exception. Sara Paxton, the nerds, and other people do a fine job acting. Music isn't bad either, considering '07 wasn't that good of a year. Many amusing parts and references to Snow White are easily found. Good morals embracing being different should be a neat reminder for the teenage/young adult girls, the target audience. How many people don't like it is beyond me, because this isn't anything like those dumb teen TV shows nowadays.
Well, it's a little awkward, and the first half-hour isn't much. But it gets better.
Despite being Snow's lesser-known cousin, Sydney's got heart!
