Review of Swordsman (1990) by Mattias E — 29 Jan 2009
History was made when old school director King Hu hooked up with hot kid Tsui Hark to give the old wuxia genre a shot in the arm. Swordsman is not nearly as emblematic as it's successors, though, and for good reason too.
It simply has a few half-ass features too many. The severe miscasting is just one example, which of course was corrected in second and third installments with Jet Li and Brigitte Lin finally doing full justice to their characters.
