Review of Sword of the Beast (1965) by Felipe V — 16 Jan 2008
There are some deep stuff here. You feel the passion of poor Samurai to rise up in the hierarchy. They were loyal, hardworking and ruthless, some even give up their love and family for their missions. But they were triked by even more cruel councilors.
A hero was made in the move. He has strength, integrity, altruism and wisdom. But there are some lousy stuff here that make it close to some lousy Chinese martial arts movies. I guess the director put them there only to attract a larger audience.
Two women appear only for sex, we don't even know where the women came from? some parts of the plot seems very unreasonable. For example, how can a man running for life sleep with a woman that he never knew.
Even though this is a story about ancient Japan, I guess it reflects the society of Japan in the 60s and 70s, when the economy was booming, people were struggling for better life, crulety and atrocity were everywhere, people would like to do anything for money.
Just like China today!
