Review of Switchblade Sisters (1975) by Jeremy B — 07 Sep 2007
Well now. Sadly, we will never again experience a period of inventive, fearless and unapologetic exploitation cinema like that of the late 60s to the mid 70s. Movies like Switchblade Sisters, Faster Pussycat Kill Kill, Shaft and Friday Foster are fun; fun to watch and, it strikes me, had been fun to make.
For example, after the Dagger Debs team up with the black Maoist feminist urban guerillas and kick the asses of their Latino male adversaries, they celebrate their victory with cake and lemonade, because they're teenage girls.
It's brilliant. Also, find me a mainstream Hollywood film that addresses pimping teenage 'tang out of the high school. Though we now dwell in an era of "broadcast yourself" mentality; the self-involved vanity postings of the Net are far removed from the intelligent, creative "just make it" ethos of thirty to forty years ago.
