Review of Swiss Army Man (2016) by Rich F — 06 Nov 2016
Swiss Army Man begins with an outrageous premise. Daniel Radcliff's lifeless, farting corpse that is converted into a bizarre multi-tool that saves Paul Dano's life. This is just the kind of boundary pushing originality that is so lacking from the current filmic landscape.
Unfortunately the film itself doesn't quite live up to its surreal idea. Swiss Army Man definatly has its moments and it has two phenomenal leads in Radcliff and Dano, however, overall the film is pretty conventional.
The filmmakers never fully embrace the absurdity of the concept beyond the basic characters. It's all classically constructed, hitting the required story beats and never quite blurring the line enough between whether Radcliff's body is truly a miracle or if Dano is simply insane.
As a result, the promise of the original idea is never quite fulfilled.
