Review of Swingers (2009) by Jesse O — 23 Oct 2008
A classic that I never saw until now. It's Tarantino/Scorcese-esque but it knows it, not only referencing both of those filmmakers in the dialogue, but mimicking exact shots from their films as well. It's cheeky and might lower the film's credibility on its own a little, but it works for entertainment value.
Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau are great together. While it's clear why this film got Spielberg's attention and won Vince Vaughn his role in the Lost World the following year, the great sympathetic performance by Jon Favreau makes you wonder where his offers were? He is a director now but he really does make a good lead for this type of movie. I would have liked to have seen him in more roles.
In many ways it's the ultimate indie film and the ultimate heartbroken guy movie. Anyone who has struggled to get over somebody and then felt the freedom that it finally brings would feel at home watching this story unfold. There is hope for pathetic man-children everywhere.
