Review of Swingers (2009) by Lenny M — 19 Jul 2009
Over the years there have been many movies which have depicted men behaving badly but none have done it with as much heart as Swingers.
No others can either take credit for inventing a new term to describe your coolness, the now legendary "You're money baby".
Jon Favreau's writer and star pet project could be described as the male Sex & The City but that doesn't really do it enough justice. It's rare on film to find a movie that shows the male side of a break up from a relationship in such an honest fashion but Swingers absolutely nails it. Favreau's performance as Mike, jilted by his long distance girlfriend is so true, the obsession with trying to work out what went wrong so he can move on with the help of a pre-annoying Vince Vaughn.
As great as Swingers is at dealing with male heartbreak, it shines equally as well when it just deals with guys being guys. Playing video games, talking about women, talking to women. Vaughn and his partner in crime, Patrick Van Horn, are excellent in these scenes, delivering the greatly scripted lines with plenty of comedy.
Director Doug Liman has never bettered this and has gone on to make some disappointing movies but this is an absolute triumph of a study of the male psyche and why we are the way that we are and what we really care about.
