Review of Swingers (2009) by Fernando B — 27 Aug 2010
Written by John Favreau, Swingers is a mature, yet thoroughly hilarious story of friendship and would-be romance in Hollywood. Favreau also plays the lead with a charming nebbishness - a sort of Woody Allen persona for the 90's.
Directed by Doug Liman, the film is highly stylised. Yet that never draws away from its credible characters and its genuinely relatable insights into love, loneliness & loss.
Rarely, anymore, will you find a film on dating this smart. Intelligence, in this genre, has been replaced by crude humour and unsympathetic, childish protagonists. There are no contrived setups here, just a consistently sharp humour that effortlessly emanates from well-rendered performances. Vaughn and Favreau have never been better.
