Review of Swingers (2009) by Chinmai R — 23 Nov 2013
It's quite sluggishly paced--which is a big letdown after a rapid-fire beginning--and features excessively repetitive banter--which, if used sparingly, would have achieved the filmmakers presumable goal of making the characters seem cool--but Swingers also features a few moments of great depth and understanding about the theme of moving on from the past that alone elevate the movie.
As a comedy, it's never laugh-out-loud funny, but it's an extremely realistic and keen portrayal (more than any other film I've seen, which is saying a lot) of young guys just looking for fun, girls, and a big break, which is what makes the film what it is.
I was hoping for better (you'd be hard-pressed to find a character more annoying than Jon Favreau until the last 10 minutes of the movie, seriously), but there are a few moments, along with the overall realism of the film, that I won't soon forget.
