Review of Swing Vote (2008) by Astrid T — 28 Jan 2009
This film takes a very sensational and over the top idea and runs with it, for better or for worse. And in all honesty, the end result is a film with heart that draws you in. Costner is in a comfortable and familiar role as the dysfunctional, single father. It's patriotic and very American, but yet it's down to earth and accessible. And if one does get lost in the politics of it all, the ending is poetic enough to allow this to cross borders.
Given that Swing Vote could have very easily been one big gimmick, it comes across as honest with something to say. And that's respectable.
