Review of Swing Vote (2008) by Marissa H — 18 Apr 2009
Kevin Costner doesn't appear in too many movies anymore, which is sort of sad because I always like him. This time he takes a stab at some political humor.
Costner seems to be a pretty shitty dad in the movie at first. The dude likes to sleep and drink and not give a shit about his daughter, but of course he comes around in this warm but surprisingly poignant film. The girl that plays his daughter deserves a special mention, she didn't annoy me and was actually a joy to watch. Even more of a joy are the hilarious fake ads the candidates make to persuade Bud to vote for them. Excellent satirical value.
At the end of the day, the movie is a pretty basic comedy with nothing special to offer, but then again, compared to Meet the Spartans this film deserves at least ten fucking Oscars, so it's all about perspective I guess. I would have liked to see which one gets elected, but they never reveal it, so that was a bit of a bummer. Worth a watch during a slow day at work.
