Review of Swing Vote (2008) by Nathan L — 27 Jul 2011
Joshua Michael Stern's creation, Swing Vote, is a movie that tries to be a feel-good comedy and a political satire at the same time. Unfortunately, with those two opposing genres, you can't have it both ways.
Featuring a huge cast of stars and cameos, the movie tries quite hard to please its audience and loses something along the way. There are actually some very funny bits that surface when the two candidates running for president (Dennis Hopper and current prez Kelsey Grammer) try to one-up each other in winning Bud's decisive vote, including running ads supporting policies that violate their party's beliefs severely (the abortion spot with Hopper is the laugh-out-loud funniest part of the movie).
In the end, it's charming enough and it doesn't follow the Hollywood Formula playbook too closely. It's worth a look and will probably make you chuckle more than once.
