Review of Swing Kids (1993) by Emily B — 10 Sep 2007
Remembering that it was heavier than I expected the first time around, I thoroughly enjoyed it again 14 years later. It's hard to imagine that there really were "swing kids", and that they actually acted like they do in the movie.
However, the harsh reality of the Nazi regime juxtaposed with Swing is really well done in this movie (to the point of shocking), and makes you want to do some historical research. Fabulous performances by the young cast; you'll have to have a heart of stone to not cry at some point.
I wish the accents had been more realistic, but otherwise, it's a great movie. It's also totally refreshing to hear the guys singing. Clearly not dubbed, like it would be if it had been made today.
Don't get me wrong: I sincerely doubt this is a realistic portrayal, but it IS a good movie, and does make you think.
