Review of Swing Kids (1993) by Ben L — 09 Apr 2008
Far and away the best WWII film I've ever seen. From the first strokes of the drum which open the movie, you'll be carried away to a place and time swingin' with music and crackling with political tension.
Rather than just heaping on the tragedies, it chills you and thrills you with suspense, plot twists and powerful images that milk the drama out of WWII like I've been waiting a book or movie to do for a long time.
The theme of swing dancing gives the movie rhythm and panache and makes it fun to watch, not just dreary and sobering. Don't be fooled - this is as horrifying a story as any that has ever been told about the Nazi regime.
But the movie fills it with fun, romance and human drama so that it really feels like you watched a great movie, not just some dulcet History Channel documentary.
