Review of Swimming with Sharks (1994) by David K — 30 Oct 2007
This is one of Kevin Spacey's GREAT performances, perhaps his best as the sarcastic sadistic Hollywood Studio Exec. This movie isn't for the faint of heart, and gets even darker towards the end.
Spacey snarls, dismissed, offends, abuses, and has a wonderful time doing it. Frank Whaley is the put-upon personal assistant. Director George Huang made this movie after meeting Robert Rodriguez on his trip to Hollywood when Robert was shopping "El Mariachi" around.
He apparantly told Robert, "Man, I am in awe. I wish I could make this great a movie ("El Mariachi") on a shoestring budget." Robert reportedly replied, "Quit your studio job and make the movie!" And so we have, "Swimming with Sharks," the nastiest little movie about Hollywood in quite a while.
Not for the faint of heart, but those who appreciate the darkness in humor may enjoy this flick. TMJ.
