Review of Swimming Pool (2003) by Aimee C — 20 Aug 2008
I have to admit that my sole reason for even watching this movie to begin with was Ludivine Sagnier's bikini-clad body. After having watched it that remains the best part of the movie. The plot is fairly decent though, even if it takes a while to get going.
The first part, where Sarah Morton is moving into the house and is alone, is pretty slow and dead. Things pick up a little when Julie (Sagnier) moves in, not the least because we get nice long looks at her perfect (and often unclothed) body.
.. like I said, the best part of the movie. But the tension between Julie and Sarah makes things interesting as well. Still, it could move a little faster. In the last part of the movie things speed up considerably as we finally get to the meat of the story.
The ending is bizarre and surreal and definitely calls into question our perception of the events of the entire movie. It's a subtle film, but not necessarily in a bad way - it makes you think and debate about what actually happened in the story, not about some stupid subjective pseudo-artistic thematic bullshit (e.
G. The Motel). However, the film suffers from a frustratingly slow pace during the first part of the film when Sarah is alone.
