Review of Swimfan (2002) by Pedro C — 14 May 2017
This cheap-o teen thriller essentially takes Fatal Attraction and transposes the action to an American high school.
Woeful plot holes and doubtful developments bog down a seen-it-all-before screenplay that delivers more ills than thrills, but wide-eyed Erika Christenson gives a genuinely admirable performance as the psychotic teen driving the action. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for leading man Jesse Bradford who, aside from looking at least ten years older than the character he's trying to play, appears to have undergone charisma extraction therapy.
If the screenplay and acting aren't wobbly enough, director John Polson dulls down the film's more decent moments with shaky double-takes and spacey repetitions. Perhaps the worst aspect of the film, however, is the niggling feeling it'll give most viewers that the whole thing might have had potential, had it been delivered as a madcap creepy-chick comedy.
