Review of Swept Away (2002) by Michael R — 12 Aug 2009
Brit director Guy Ritchie strikes out with this abrasive remake of Lina Wertmuller's Italian 1974 original, which starred Giancarlo Giannini. Here, his son Adriano stars the poor Italian fisherman cast away on a Mediterranean island with a spoiled rich bitch (Madonna at her most obnoxious), turning the tables on her, until they - surprise - fall in love.
Unconvincing, wildly uneven comedy/drama finds time for "cute" charades montage and dancing numbers in between the sexual politics. Not as bad as you've heard, but close...very close.
